The onset of the rainy season and farmers’ sowing strategy for pearl millet cultivation in Southwest Niger
2011
A multi-year (2004-2009) field survey of on-farm sowing practices in 10 villages located in south-west Niger close to Niamey, is analysed to investigate the relationships (i) between rainfall and the sowing date of pearl millet and the risk of sowing failure, (ii) between sowing and meteorological/agro-climatic onset dates, (iii) between sowing/onset dates, and simulated and observed yield/biomass at the end of the season. Even if some villages sow without any synchronous or anterior rainfall, most parcels (73% out of the 1551 available cases) are sown during and just after a 2-day wet spell receiving at least 10 mm. In fact, there is a strong correlation (r = 0.82-0.95 depending on onset d…
Analysis of the relationship between start of the rainy season and farmer's sowing strategy in the Niamey area and its impacts on the pearl millet yi…
2009
International audience; Relationship between start of the rainy season and farmer's planting date have been analysed at local scale through in situ daily rainfall records and agronomical measurement provided by on-farm survey at plot scale for 10 villages network located on the mesoscale AMMA-CATCH Niger site during the 2004-2007 rainy seasons. Many classical empirical methods of monsoon onset dectection (e.g. Benoit, Kowal, Sivakumar, Ati, Marteau, Balme, Sultan) and numerical methods based on crop model SARRAH have been compared to the observed farmer's sowing date. Results show that SARRAH and Balme mean onset date are close to sowing date. But spatial and temporal variability of the sow…
Growth and development of Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. under different trophic conditions
2014
Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. (common ragweed) is an annual weed regarded as an invasive plant in France. This species can be found in a large range of soil types with regard to texture, pH or nutrient contents. Furthermore, its tolerance to different forms of stress increases its spread potential. This work was undertaken to evaluate the development and growth of common ragweed under different trophic conditions in a common garden. Three cohorts of 15 plants per treatments were sown in spring 2013 and the effects of nitrogen and irrigation were compared on each sowing dates. During the first weeks, vegetative appearance is strongly linked with the sum of temperature. For the first cohort, the…
